NCFL History and its Roots
NCFL Roots
In 1996 four independent teams, the Alameda County Lawmen, the Sacramento Stray Dogs, the Mendocino Loggers and the Rocklin Massacre banded together to form the beginnings of the Golden Coast Football League (GCFL), playing their games in the 1996 Winter season. The next year, 1997, the Alameda County Lawmen and the Rocklin Massacre folded, but the NorCal Lawmen, Oakland Vipers and a team from Rio Linda all joined the leaue. In its third season, 1998, the Central Valley Raiders, Sacramento Heat and Bay Area Bandits all joined to make a total of eight teams.
In 2000, the league changed its name to the Golden Coast Amateur Football League (GCAFL). By the 2001 season, there were 12 teams playing in the GCAFL and the league still played its games in the winter season. In 2002 the GCAFL and the other major Northern Califorina football league, the United States Amateur Football Federation (USAFF - Spring League), merged to form the Golden State Amateur Football League (GSAFL). In 2002, the GSAFL had over 20 teams all playing in the spring season. The GSAFL ran for four seasons from 2002 through 2005 including as many as 24 teams in a season, and crowned four different AAA champions during those four years.
Following the 2005 season, the GSAFL closed it's doors and officially folded. Several of the top teams from the GSAFL have now banded together again, officially re-forming the GCFL in 2006, allowing the 'Golden' history of Minor League Football in Northern California to contine onward for the 11th straight season in 2006.
